These desi babes don't just look good on screen--they've got great acting skills too!

Vidya Balan

Her fashion sense might not be among the best in Bollywood, but her acting skills certainly are! Since her well-received debut in 'Parineeta', she's delivered several great performances, including those in 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai', 'Paa' and 'Ishqiya'.

In an industry dominated by item girl-wannabes, she is a rare woman of substance whose acting skills are second to none

Kajol

Poised to make a much-awaited comeback in an animated flick in 2012, Kajol's made her mark on Bollywood for over two memorable decades. She's handled bubbly roles like the ones in 'Yeh Dillagi' and 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' just as well as her serious roles in movies like 'Fanaa', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' and 'My Name is Khan'.

Her resume is stacked with versatile performances in some of the biggest Hindi movies of our time!

Madhuri Dixit

After a listless debut in 'Abodh' way back in 1984--and a handful of mediocre films that followed--Madhuri Dixit made a big splash with 'Tezaab' in 1988. She never looked back since, and delivered hit after hit until her 2002 swan song 'Devdas'. She even made a comeback in 2007 with 'Aaja Nachle'--for which she won the Flimfare Best Actress Award.

Speaking of awards, this timeless beauty has more accolades and honors than any of her contemporaries!

Shabana Azmi

When it comes to serious acting in Bollywood, Shabana Azmi truly is the Godmother! She first hit the big screen in 1974 in 'Ankur', and won the National Film Award for Best Actress on debut. Role after role, she's delivered great performances in films like 'Arth', 'Khandar', 'Paar', 'Godmother' and 'Swami'.

She's been presented with all sorts of awards, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, for her contribution to Indian cinema.

Nandita Das

Although mainstream success has eluded her, Nandita Das is best known for her critically acclaimed roles in over eight languages! She first came into the spotlight with her groundbreaking role in 'Fire' in 1996. Since then, she's mostly acted in offbeat movies that offered strong character roles, like the ones in 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa' and 'Bawandar'.

Despite her modest commercial success, she's been lauded by critics and fans alike as an actress who has stayed true to her craft.

Kareena Kapoor

Part of the Kapoor dynasty, this beautiful young actress had a lot weighing on her debut appearance in 'Refugee'. She stepped up to the plate and delivered an award-winning performance opposite Abhishek Bachchan. Since then she's become one of the best actresses around, acting in notable films like 'Omkara', 'Jab We Met', 'Kurbaan' and '3 Idiots'.

Kapoor's one of the few actresses who has managed to earn critical acclaim while simultaneously enjoying massive commercial success. Talk about having her cake and eating it too!

Rekha

She started off as a child star in the South and eventually graduated to mainstream Hindi cinema. She made her mark in 1978 by starring opposite Vinod Mehra in 'Ghar' and then opposite Amitabh Bachchan in 'Muqaddar Ka Sikander'.
